Indirect service opportunities provide needed support in many of our agency’s day-to-day operations, administrative tasks and fundraising efforts. The majority of our volunteers participate in these areas. Opportunities include:

  1. Board and Advisory Committee members offer their expertise in issues related to governance of the agency and to support for programs. Board members serve 3-year terms. There is an application and interview process for potential board members. Depending on the current composition of the board, the board development committee is usually looking for individuals with particular expertise or professional experience. Those interested in serving on the Board of Directors should contact our Executive Director. Both our Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Programs have Advisory Committees that meet once per quarter. Members of these committees are often part of the professional community who interact with domestic violence or sexual assault from another perspective such as law enforcement, the judicial system, child advocacy or mental health services. If you are interested in serving on either of these committees, please contact our Domestic Violence or Sexual Assault Program Coordinators.
  2. Clerical assistants perform a variety of tasks in several of our programs. Possible assignments include photocopying, folding brochures, preparing mailings, filing and data entry.
  3. Maintenance & construction helpers provide “handyman/handywoman” expertise for us when we have minor repair jobs that seem to come up regularly in our 114 year-old building. Sometime we need help assembling furniture, shelving or toys or moving heavy items.
  4. Holiday volunteers help us by distributing food baskets at Thanksgiving and again in December, volunteer with the Elgin Community Toy Give-away in December, wrap gifts at Spring Hill Mall in December, and help with holiday parties for shelter residents throughout the year.
  5. Fundraising volunteers are essential to the financial health of our agency. Our largest single fundraiser each year is our Annual Benefit Auction. This event requires many volunteers both in preparation for the auction and for the event itself. For more information, please click here.
Other possibilities include helping with some of our smaller fundraisers, collecting used cell phones for our cell phone recycling program or holding a fundraiser on our behalf. Various organizations and businesses have hosted golf outings for us, collected donations of cash and goods from customers or group members, held silent auctions and special benefit events, or offered “blue jean days” for employees in exchange for donations to us. If you are interested in organizing such an activity on our behalf, we ask that you please contact the Coordinator of our Resource Development Office so that she can provide you with information and that we can be informed about and authorize those using the name of our agency in order to raise funds.
  6. Volunteers with special skills or professional expertise offer essential services to us on a regular basis. Medical professionals might provide training in first aid or information about significant health issues to our staff members and direct service volunteers. Artists and graphic designers can help us with designing items for special events or with improving the look of our brochures and other widely distributed materials. Those with sewing skills might make receiving blankets for infants in shelter or curtains for women in our transitional living program. Writers might prepare promotional pieces for us or contribute to our newsletter. Gardeners might share produce from their garden or provide flowers for our lobby. The volunteer application provides you with an opportunity to share such information about yourself. It sometimes takes a while for us to match your abilities with our needs, but we make every effort to do so when it is appropriate.
  7. “Reruns” is our volunteer-run resale shop. All items have been donated, and proceeds return to the Community Crisis Center to support operating expenses. Volunteers are needed to sort, price, and sell items from the 1341 Manor Court location in Elgin. Volunteers may help one day a week or one day a month. If you’d like more information about working at Reruns, please call the store directly at 847-695-2662 . The store hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm & Thursday 10:0 am to 7:00 pm. We are closed on Sunday & Monday.
